Today’s travelers seek to immerse themselves in the cultures, customs and natural wonders of a destination for more transformative experiences,” said Roger E. Block, CTC, President of Travel Leaders Network. “Our specialists are available to assist consumers on choosing the best destination for their discerning needs, whether that includes an expedition cruise anywhere in the world, or a customized itinerary, such as with an eye toward ecotourism.”

When active and adventure traveling Americans venture internationally, about 30% travel to South America, according to the ATTA. Other continents break down as: Europe 26%, Africa 24% and Asia 13%. Travel Leaders agents can assist travelers with their active itineraries, whether it includes cycling, snorkeling, hiking or discovering a hidden part of an exotic city. Here’s a look at some of the featured destinations they recommend.

Galapagos Islands. Many travelers who explore these islands, which lie just off the western coast of South America, do so to marvel at the stunning foliage and amazing animals, such as the blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas. On the island Isabela, one of the 14 main islands, one can snorkel inside a cave to see penguins and marine turtles. The isolation of the islands has allowed nature to develop in ways exclusive to the Galapagos, providing travelers lots to explore, such as nature hikes led by experienced guides.

Botswana, South Africa and Zambia. Extraordinary travel experiences are expected in regions of Africa. Travelers can indulge in first-class services in a small group traveling with experts who are knowledgeable about the land. There are opportunities to ride aboard a vintage 1920s steam train, take a helicopter ride over the Okavango Delta, or row in a traditional Mokoro canoe safari. For those who want to feel the earth beneath their feet while interacting with the locals, there are safari walks, such as the rhino walking safari to experience the sights, sounds, scents of Africa’s wildlife.

Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The beauty of the Middle East is alive in Jordan where the modern generation meets ancient majestic ruins of bygone civilizations. Here, one can have an elegant dinner atop a medieval castle overlooking the Jordan Valley or a barbecue on the shores of the Dead Sea after a day of relaxing in its naturally buoyant waters. Whether in Amman or Petra, for an up close slice of culture, one can arrange a homestay with local Jordanians or spend time mingling with the Bedouins to learn more about their music and customs. For the more active, the Jordan Trail is the perfect hike with diverse terrains and landscapes.

Queensland, Cairns, and Tasmania, Australia. With more than 300 sunny days per year in Queensland, one can snorkel, sail, fly or drive to experience the 1,400 miles of living coral. Also, one will encounter a web of rainforests, ochre desert plains and spectacular wildlife, from sea turtles to whales. For majestic mountain views, head to Cairns to experience the Kuranda Scenic Railway as it winds its way through the rugged mountains and tropical rainforests. Venturing elsewhere in Australia, experience the Tasmanian wilderness and the Victorian coastline. Australia, is ideal for short hikes, and your Travel Leaders travel agent can even arrange for a local guide to show you the less touristy side of the region.

Hawaiian Islands. The six islands of Hawaii have their own unique personalities and unforgettable journeys. Kaua’i has hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches. Windsailing along the Napali Coast or taking a boat tour or even kayaking to the sea caves, adds adventure. O’ahu is perfect for history buffs with its iconic landmarks, such as Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor. Maui has charming small towns and local farms, and an opportunity to hike Haleakala to catch the sunrise. In Moloka’i, take a guided mule ride down the tallest sea cliffs in the world. The smallest island, Lana’i, is the place to escape from the hustle and just enjoy nature. The Big Island of Hawaii is where you tackle the rugged black lava terrain of the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
